Black Elk Speaks Essay Example for Free
Black Elk Speaks Essay Black Elk Speaks is about a Native American boy that has visions and these visions help him with the religious aspects of live. He has these visions that tell him what to do and shows him the path to righteousness. These visions can also be seen as myths, which are stories that try to explain something. Every culture has their own collection of myths. Black Elk Speaks is also a very symbolic book, because it has the use of many objects or people that represent other things. In the American culture, as well as other cultures around the world, are also very symbolic. The American culture is very diverse in that there are many different cultures that have mixed and created the American culture. The American culture is not something that is easily explained, because it is so mixed with many other cultures from around the world. At first there were American Indians and they brought along their tribes and myths and rituals. Then came the British and over time the Chinese because of the California gold rush. In time America was in habited with many different nationalities and ideas. These ideas were slowly but surely blended together. As for example, when the British shared their meal with the Indians they were also sharing their culture and food. The exchange of food and other ideas brought the two distant worlds closer. The more important ideas are what does all this exchanging of food and ideas symbolize? ââ¬Å"A symbol is something such as an object, picture, written word, sound, or particular mark that represents something else by association, resemblance, or conventionâ⬠(Wikipedia, 1). The object used in Black Elk Speaks is a pipe, given to them by a ââ¬Å"young and very beautifulâ⬠woman, which symbolizes trust and companionship. Now, my friend, let us smoke together so that there may be only good between usâ⬠(Black Elk Speaks, 5). Black Elk and Neihardt have a smoke together to share their friendship and trust between the two. The pipe can also symbolize peace amongst people and/or tribes. Another act, such as the killing of a bison, might be seen as bravery, integrity, courage, pride. The American culture changed drastically when more cultures were included, such as the Chinese and African Americans. Slaves brought in from Africa, which meant that they brought along their culture and tendencies to America. Even though slavery was not the right thing to do, it brought a new culture into America and made it more diverse and ââ¬Å"developed. â⬠For example, superstitions are something that has shaped the culture as well. Spilled salt, walking under a ladder, a broken mirror, etc. are all superstitions that are said to lead to bad luck. When someone does one of these things they believe that bad luck is upon them. This causes them to act in a different way. Something bad in the future happens they may turn and blame it on the bad luck. Maybe some of the things that happen are just coincidences but culture has taught us to believe that it was the bad luck caused by the spilled salt, broken mirror, or walking under a ladder. Another big symbol in Black Elk Speaks is the four ribbons tied to the pipe that Black Elk and Neihardt smoke. It represents the powers of the four quarters of the universe. There are four ribbons tired to the pipe and each ribbon is a different color, which symbolizes a different power. Black is for the west, the source of the rain; red is for the east, the place of the morning star that gives wisdom; white is for the north, source of cleansing wind; and yellow is for the south, the places of summer and growth. Myths are another big thing that shapes a culture. Black Elkââ¬â¢s visions are like the myths in this story. In his vision, a bay horse greets Black Elk. He then tells Black Elk that he will tell him a story of the life history of himself. The horse walks in a circular motion ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËBehold me! ââ¬â¢ he said, ââ¬ËMy life-history you shall see. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ¦ ââ¬ËBehold them! Their history you shall knowââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Black Elk Speaks, 19). Each side that the horse goes to there are twelve horses that are each in a group of different colors. The horses to the north are white, those to the east are sorrel, those to the south are buckskin, and the ones to the west are black. The horses will take Black Elk to his Grandfathers. The sky fills with dancing horses that change into diverse creators and lead a formation of the horses from the four directions. They arrive at a cloud those changes into a tepee with a rainbow door, which inside the six Grandfathers are waiting. A myth is like a traditional story which usually contains some sort of hero or event. In this myth, the vision that Black Elk is having, is an event that is occurring. A bay horse appears in front of him and shows him the way to meet the six Grandfathers. Sometimes myths may sound like a fairy tale. For example, in ancient China, there was once this monkey that was very troublesome and cause destruction to the heavens. He was punished and put under a mountain. After about several hundred to a thousand years a monk comes along to save the monkey and there starts a journey of adventures and evil to obtain immortality. This is a myth because it is a legend of a hero that is punished for his crimes and therefore pays his debt by serving under his master. There are many aspects of a culture. The American culture is very diverse and tough to explain in one short answer. There is no true American culture because it is just a mixture of different cultures from around the world. Black Elk Speaks shows the forms of myths and symbols and how they contribute to American culture. Black Elkââ¬â¢s myths and symbols are very similar to those of the American culture.

Why Do Some Societies Make Disastrous Decisions?
ââ¬Å"How on earth could a society make such an obviously disastrous decisions as to cut down all the trees on which it depended? â⬠was the question that started Jared Diamonds urge to do further research on societal collapses (392). His urge to write about this topic resulted from a conversation he had about the collapse of Easter Island society. In this piece of Diamonds ââ¬Å"Why Do Some Societies Make Disastrous Decisions,â⬠he discusses past and present societies that have fallen due to their inability to handle oncoming disasters. In general, Diamonds target audience is societies. He uses various strategies to draw the readerââ¬â¢s attention, in hopes to warn and get enough information across for some motivation (393). After being astonished by our societal blindness today, Diamond has proposed different decision-making errors contributing to various societal collapses. Jared Diamond starts off by describing himself as a teacher for the University of California at Los Angeles who, alike his students, is ââ¬Å"highly motivatedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"open-mindedâ⬠(392). He uses these words in attempt to establish credibility from the reader. Next he draws the readerââ¬â¢s attention in by targeting our concerns using diction. Diamond repeats the questions that his students wondered about after learning about the collapse of Easter Islandââ¬â¢s society, ââ¬Å"How often did people wreak ecological damage intentionally, or at least while aware of the likely consequences? â⬠ââ¬Å"How often did people instead do it without meaning to, or out of ignorance? and ââ¬Å"If there are still people left alive a hundred years from nowââ¬âthose people of the next century will be as astonished about our blindness today as we are about the blindness of the Easter Islandersâ⬠(392). As you can see, he uses phrases such as ââ¬Å"wreak ecological damageâ⬠, ââ¬Å"aware of the likely consequences? â⬠ââ¬Å"Out of ignoranceâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"astonished about our blindnessâ⬠to create diction in attempt to draw attention and concer n (Diamond 392).

Essay on Horse slaughter. Is it really worth it - 2536 Words
Horse slaughter. Is it really worth it? Horse slaughter has been going on for a long time now and humans have increased their horsemeat consumption because of the mad cow disease. Mad cow disease is issued from the fattening foods farmers give to their cattle. In the food are sheepââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ bones grinded into tiny, tiny bits. Ignorant till the outburst, makers didnââ¬â¢t know that in sheep bones there is the virus of the dreaded disease. The disease doesnââ¬â¢t affect sheep as it is only in their bones but when the cows eat it, it gets into their systems and is passed on through their meat to humans. Many people are going off cow meat and onto horsemeat. Countless numbers of them are oblivious to the fact that horsemeat is just as dangerous asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This horror can go on up to 90 hours. When they get to the slaughterhouse, the horses are released into another pen. Blinded by the light, they trip down the ramp and stumble into others. There is no food or drink and the many horses are herded into a narrow passageway where they can only move forward single file. They can smell the blood and death but canââ¬â¢t place it as their senses have weakened without food or water. Stumbling, they follow their friends along to the knocking box. In some countries they use hammers, others a gun like thing. These metal tools go through the forehead and split the bone, right into the brain, aiming to make the horses senseless. In pain, they collapse. In America, for example, the horses slip down a ramp into a blood-sodden room. There, a man hoists them up into the air by tying their hind legs. In other countries, France for example, the horses are left on the floor where their throats are slashed and they bleed into the gutter. In both countries, the legs are broken or even hacked off while the horse is bleeding to death. The reason why they bleed them to death is so that the meat is good for human consumption. The governments have imposed a law that the horses, or slaughtered animals, must be made senseless. This is done by stunning or electrifying but it doesnââ¬â¢t always work. In a lot of pictures I have seen, the horses are twisting their legs in pain when they are hoisted and their throatsShow MoreRelated Looking Into the Past in Vonneguts Slaughter House-Five Essay1006 Words à |à 5 PagesLooking Into the Past in Vonneguts Slaughter House-Five In the spring of 1945, near the end of World War II, American and British bombers rained a hail of fire upon the city of Dresden, Germany. Case Study Construction of an Apartment in Novena
Question: Discuss about theCase Studyfor Construction of an Apartment in Novena. Answer: Introduction The construction industry is considered as the largest industry in the world. This industry is sited as a growth indicator for the economic conditions of a country. The main goal of the construction project is to build an apartment in Novena and the important resources, which are required for building, includes labour, material and money (Nenonen et al 2014). It is quite important to make the industry more effective as well as efficient for making the utilization of resources properly. According to Kucukvar, Murat, and Omer (2013), the planning as well as estimation of various activities on construction sites are unpredictable due to lack of data on the labour productivity. This assignment focuses on various literatures in order to review as well as research on the labour productivity, which is considered as one of the important task for construction of an apartment in Novena. The paper also discusses the task of the project, human resource, productivity, factors affecting productivity and various productivity improvement techniques. Defining Project Task and Human Resource It is stated by Kanadasan et al (2015), that the construction industry is unique as the project associated with it is large and it is built on site. There are number of project task, which are required in for building an apartment, but structural work is considered as the most significant as it is time consuming (Wasilkiewicz et al 2016). Structural work comprises of number of tasks which includes concrete mixing, testing of the sample, concrete curing and many more. The duration that is needed for completing the task is not possible to estimate as the architectural works are generally unpredictable. According to Sarhan and Andrew (2013), the main resource that is required for the construction of an apartment is the workers. The human resource literature is needed for completing the task which includes employee participation, employee involvement and employee empowerment. All this concepts are very much essential for engaging the employees in order to encourage them in their work. Defining the Productivity Employee productivity is an assessment which is utilized in order to measure the efficiency of the workers. According to Brinkman et al (2015), productivity is evaluated in context with the output of an employee within a specific time-period. Productivity is defined as an average hours required by the labour for installing a unit of material. It is stated by Nasir et al (2012), that 1.0% productivity can be achieved by a construction project with 40 hour of workweek excluding all the planned holidays by the employees. The productivity of an employee is measured relative to an average for the workers who do the same work. This is because success of construction is fully dependent on productivity of the workplace (McCabe 2012). The construction productivity can be perfect or the achievement is 100% when there are no delays during the time of construction of the apartment, every worker can work safely, every resource fit with demand, the weather is 70 degree Fahrenheit and there is no l itigation remained at the completion of the project. Factors Affecting Productivity Productivity of the construction project is dependent on various inter-related factors, which are discussed below: Schedule Compression When an early delay occur in the construction procedure of the apartment, compression for the entire time frame or activity helps in compensating the interruptions in order to complete the assigned task. According to Ilozor, Benedict and David (2012), in the perspective of professional scheduling, various schedule compressions can occur without accelerating the specific work activities of the individuals which helps in reflecting the delays. In many project, schedules are not provided for reloading the resources effectively. As a result, a properly updated schedule helps in reflecting the delays, which focuses on completion time of the apartment construction without shortening various activities of the individuals. It is argued by Yi and Albert (2013), that scheduling compression may result into various extra labour forces for completing the desired task by the contractor. This is because the shortening of the entire duration helps the contractor to complete the task on time (Hardin and Dave 2015). When it is linked with overtime, it causes productivity lossless due to shortage of various material tools as well as equipment for supporting the extra labour. Managerial Factors The attitude and skills of the managers have a crucial bearing on the productivity of the construction industry. For the construction of an apartment, the industry follows latest technologies as well as innovations for increasing their average productivity but due to some reasons their productivity does not increases. This is mainly due to the inefficient as well as indifferent techniques followed by the management of the organization (Nenonen et al 2014). Experienced as well as committed mangers help in enhancing the productivity of an organization. The job performances of the employees are fully dependent on their ability as well as willingness towards work. According to Kanadasan et al (2015), the management of the organization act as a catalyst in order to create both the ability as well as willingness among the workers of the organization which indirectly helps in increasing the productivity of construction industry. It is stated by Kucukvar, Murat and Omer (2013), that advanced technology needs labour who have knowledge about the recent technologies so that they can operate the equipments efficiently. It is only possible if the management of the organization is sound. Proper management also helps in securing both the optimum utilization of human as well as technical resources. Supervision Construction of the apartment is dependent on some design, drawings as well as on several specifications. If the drawing or specifications provided are not clear then the productivity of the construction industry automatically decreases, as the workers of the project are fully dependent on the specifications or information provided to them. It can cause delay of the task or the task can be stopped completely or it can be postponed until clear instruction is provided to the workers. It is opined by Sarhan and Andrew (2013), that the productivity of the work decreases by 30% if the process of working is changed and therefore it is very much important for the supervisor of the project to keep an eye on the various processes that are followed for completing the project. For example, the contractor cannot start withhis job until an inspection on various resources is done effectively. It is the task of the supervisors to check whether the process of construction is proceeding as per the sp ecifications and designs or not (Nasir et al 2012).The absenteeism of the supervisors can stop all the work which requires their attendance such as casting concrete, backfilling, delaying inspection and many more. Therefore, supervisors play a significant role in the construction procedure of the apartment. Productivity Improvement Techniques Management plays an important role in improving the productivity of an industry. According to McCabe(2014), the management technique which followed by the construction project in order to improve the productivity is Providing supplemental training and educational opportunities to the workers. Managers of an organization are very much responsible for enhancing the productivity of the construction workforce (Hardin, Brad and Dave 2015). They help in providing different types of supplemental training as well as educational opportunities to its employees so that they accustomed with the new technological innovations which are introduced in the organization. Kucukvar, Murat and Omer (2013) stated that the procedures of training improve the style of working of the employees and therefore, the construction of the apartment is done as per the specifications provided. The managers of the organization also help in improving the productivity by planning, proper selection, by utilizing as well a s controlling resources effectively. The managers generally commit to productivity and demonstrate them with the help of their actions. The productivity of the construction project can also be improved by using the following techniques of field survey and work sampling. According to Kanadasan et al (2015), field surveys are generally organized for improving the productivity of the construction project as well as for improving the conditions of the project sites. By using the technique, one can easily identify the various obstacles that are present in the path construction success. Sarhan and Andrew (2013) stated that the technique also helps in identifying the specific reasons, which are associated with project delay or failure. If the obstacles of the project are known one can improve the processes and automatically it will have positive impact on the productivity of the industry. Ilozor, Benedict and David (2012) stated that the method of work sampling is fully dependent on various statistical sampling theories and it is considered as one of the sophisticated procedure. It is applied for estimating the percentage of tie that is required by a labour in context with the productivity of the construction industry. This measurement is quite important for improving the success of the industry (Wasilkiewicz et al 2016). The process mainly involves identification of the current activity rating as well as the various sources of productive and non-productive modes. It can be analyzed subjectively by levelling the various details of the classification scheme adopted by the project. Conclusion It can be concluded that the research helps in identifying and assessing the various factors which increases the labour productivity and the research also helps in evaluating a management strategy for the structural framework of the labour productivity. The paper examines various techniques that are helpful in improving the productivity of the workers and this is ensured in order to avoid penalty of being late in various projects. It is found that managers play a significant role in improving the success of the construction project by increasing the ability and willingness of the workers towards job with the help of training and educational opportunities.
